Leafleting on Skates

How to Pass Out Pamplets on Inline Skates

Are you tired of standing on street corners? Have you run out of creative ways to keep leafleting fun?

I have a solution for you. My solution will help end the routine that can come into leafleting...try LEAFLETING ON IN-LINE SKATES! You'll get exercise and have a blast!

Leafleting can really be fun on wheels! Here are some techniques that will get you rolling.

Practice in Your Kitchen

The first important thing to do is get your skates on and to stand up with a bag full of pamphlets on your shoulder. I suggest keeping your shoes tied to your leaflet bag in case you need to take off your skates.

You might want to practice holding a heavy leaflet bag filled with about 500 pamphlets and skating around your kitchen first. Balance is the key! As you carry your leaflet bag on your left shoulder, you might want to drop your right hip and shoulder so you don't tip over.

Now that you have practiced skating with a leaflet bag in your kitchen, you are now ready to hit the streets...

Skate on Wide Streets

One of my favorite places to leaflet on skates is on San Francisco's Market Street. The reason for this is that the sidewalks are wide. Narrow hilly sidewalks will not give you enough room to skate through crowds and pass out pamphlets to those walking toward you.

Okay, you are ready...

Put a stack of 100 pamphlets in hand and start slowly.  Skate up and down the sidewalk towards pedestrians who are walking towards you.   You will discover quickly that everyone will take a pamphlet from you since they will not have enough time to say "No."

Soon, you can build up speed. Once you go fast, you'll find you will have great fun weaving in and out of people and handing out pamphlets at the same time. You'll even notice that some people will run after you pleading for a pamphlet. You won't believe how popular you are all of a sudden! Everyone loves the challenge of grabbing a pamphlet from a moving target!

Learn How to Stop

Oops! Stopping! Yes, you are going to have to learn to do that. My suggestion....don't run into individuals as you give them a pamphlet. Okay stopping techniques...my favorite is to just lean forward and push my toes together and at the same time bend enough that as I stop, I can hand a leaflet to who I stopped in front of.

Be Prepared to Fall

Oh, you might fall, so be prepared for that. To make falls easier, bend forward and bend low, as if you are driving a racecar. The main goal here is also to keep pamphlets from flying everywhere, so hold on to those leaflets nice and tight as you go down.

Don't Waste Time

While waiting at traffic signals, you must not waste time. I suggest spinning as you wait at these corners. As you spin, pedestrians will find it a challenge, since your goal is to keep passing out pamphlets as you turn. Once you finish your spin, focus on something stationary, and skate towards the stationary object. It is also a great challenge to keep passing out pamphlets when you are still dizzy, but is great fun too!

Skate Uphill First

Now, I must warn you, leafleting on wheels does make one tired. I suggest skating in an uphill direction at the beginning of your leafleting adventure. That way, you can skate downhill on the way back.

Encourage Conversation

Oh, what if someone wants to stop and talk? Hmm, you have a few choices...one is to skate back to them. The other is to tell them to run after you and if they keep up, you will get their name and address for further contact.

Have Fun

The main goal of leafleting on wheels is to mix fun with work and get exercise. Enjoy!

Happy Leaflet-Skating!
